Atheism and theism are almost always portrayed as mortal enemies engaged in a bloody battle to the death. In this Decentering Practice (which was originally Atheism for Lent 2017) we overturn that image by demonstrating a much more disturbing and shocking truth: that in reality they have been bound together in the most passionate and torturous of love affairs.
When separated from each other, both suffer. Yet when they embrace, each is enriched. Together they take on the oppressive forces of religion in its sacred and secular forms. Together they help to reveal a depth and density, mystery and texture, in the very heart of life.
Into the Cloud of Unknowing is designed to bring you to the heart of this scandalous love affair; drawing out the liberation that is to be found there.
By exploring atheism as a spiritual practice of purification, we allow it to become a ritual of exorcism powerful enough to cast out the religious dogmatism and festering fundamentalism that can lurk within our souls.
This is a decentering practice designed to envelop you in what some mystics have called the great Cloud of Unknowing. It is designed to expand your mind, enrich your soul and destabilize your world. This is a course I have personally taught for over 15 years, and in that time I've seen it transform countless lives.
What Happens When I Purchase a Ticket
You will receive a link to a private website that has the entire course. All you need to do the entire course is that link.
What to Expect
You'll get seven weeks of online articles, podcasts, book excerpts, art, music, comic books and videos - something for every day. In addition to the reflections, there is a prerecorded talk at the beginning of each week where I introduce the readings. You might want to do the course over seven consecutive weeks, however there are other options. For instance, you could do every other week, or once a month.
Atheism for Lent Groups
While you can do this as an individual, I’d like to encourage you to find others who are interested in this journey and do it as a group. Meeting together once a week to discuss the material. With that in mind, I’ve included a group ticket, click below to find out more.
