Composition VII
This is a work that appears chaotic. There is no stable centre. No clear subject. No obvious narrative. The eye searches for something to hold onto, but every form dissolves into another. Just as one shape begins to stabilise, it is overtaken by a surge of colour or a collision of lines. There is an excess of movement, intensity and possible meaning. It overwhelms the instinct to categorise and resists being reduced to “aboutness.” This painting is inspired by religious themes (The Deluge, Resurrection, Last Judgment), but they cannot be directly read from the work. For Kandinsky, it is a spiritual work, in that it aims to act directly on the individual, outside of any narrative.
