Atheism for Lent is a Decentering Practice designed to draw participants into a profound, destabilizing and unique experience of the Crucifixion, for it is in this event that we witness the dialectical concept best described by G.K Chesterton as the “instant in which God became an atheist”.
This notion is nothing less than a scandal for both traditional theists and atheists alike. For both agree that such an idea is an utter nonsense.
Theism and atheism mix as well as oil and water.
There is no way in which they can encircle and engulf each other. The theological notion of God-forsaken-by-God is either a metaphor or a myth; it cannot possibly express the Real.
In contrast, Atheism for Lent, offers a journey into the dark heart of this fascinating concept. This is a journey into a surreal space in which theism and atheism fuse together in a way that exposes theism to its atheistic shadow and atheism to its theological form.
Whether one identifies as a theist, atheist, agnostic or ignostic, this course offers a reflective practice that will ensure you never experience Good Friday in the same way again.
This year, I’ve created a ticket for people who would like to experience this journey with their community. Whether you’re thinking of doing this in a more established setting (such as a small group, educational establishment or church) or you just want to get together with friends, this ticket has you covered. It includes,
Twelve individual tickets
Advance access to the material (for the facilitator)
A ninety minute interactive video call with me
This video call is designed to help you in the art of facilitating Atheism for Lent groups. The call will bring together a small number of facilitators to ensure everyone can contribute. If you’d like more than 12 access codes, just drop me an email to discuss options.
What to Expect
Everyone participating will get access to a huge treasure trove of articles, podcasts, book excerpts and videos - one for every day of Lent (as well as lots of supplemental material). Each week is a carefully curated to bring people on a journey in which they gradually experience first hand how theism and atheism intersect with and encompass their opposite. In addition to this, each Sunday I will provide a talk that people can watch live or later (they'll be available in audio and video format).
