Exposure | Pig

Each month on Patreon, Justin Otto runs Exposure. Exposure uses movies as a lens through which we can look at some important but difficult concepts from philosophy, theology and psychoanalysis.

I’m this month’s guest, and will be discussing the film Pig, directed by Michael Sarnoski and staring Nicholas Cage. I’ll be using the canonical work of Claude-Levi Strauss on myth to drill into the central question of the film and the way that it addresses this problem. I believe that Pig offers us one of the best cinematic examples of a 'complete' narrative arch. It is a story that resolves the question of mourning (of coming to terms with the loss of an other), and that offers an answer through a ‘double twist’ in which the problem itself is not overcome, but integrated.

There will be spoilers galore, so watch before you join!.
