Pyrotheology offers an incendiary understanding of faith that blurs the lines between theism and atheism and rejects any demand for allegiance to some sacred or secular identity. Instead it is a theory and practice designed to help us confront our brokenness, embrace our unknowing and face the various difficulties in our lives.
By offering a critique of any system that promises an escape from doubt, complexity and struggle, it helps to reveal a narrow path to meaning and joy that involves embracing these very things.
While this journey into the dark might seem unappealing compared to the message of those who offer the "Good News" of certainty and satisfaction, Pyrotheology exposes how such prophets of perfection really preach bad news. Burdening us with a message directly opposed to that of Grace.
Yet, with hundreds of hours of talks, seminars and interviews detailing the work and world of Pyrotheology, it can be difficult to know where to begin. With this in mind, we have developed Building on Fire. An immersive, six-week course offering,
A basic introduction to Pyrotheology
An opportunity to discuss the ideas with others considering this journey.
A chance to explore what integration might look like.
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Building on Fire is a type of 101 course designed for those who are relatively new to the work and world of pyrotheology. The group is limited to 12 people and will offer plenty of time to discuss the issues and reflect upon how they might be applied to your life. If you fit the bill, then please do consider joining us.
STRUCTURE
Each week there will be a short video to introduce the theme for discussion. Although you can watch the video at anytime, we recommend you watch it shortly before the meeting begins so that it’s fresh in your mind.
FACILITATORS
The course will be facilitated by Gene and Deedie Street. Together they have spent the last twenty years leading drug prevention and intervention groups, parenting classes, spiritual communities and emotional healing collectives. They have served together in religious and community settings bringing spiritual solutions to personal issues. Peter Rollins will be joining the first and last session.
GRADUATION GIFT
Everyone who signs up to the course will receive a Pyrotheology coin and a personal Non-Membership card (signed by Peter Rollins). The symbolism on the coin reflects the contents of the course.
