Coffee and Concepts | If God is Dead, Nothing is Permissible

On the third Sunday of the month I invite you to start the day with me (depending on where in the world you are) for this interactive event in which I present an important philosophical concept that is connected to the seminar I gave at the beginning of the month. This allows us to go deeper into that seminar and tease out some of its ideas.

This month I want to look at the different ways that Sartre and Lacan played with Dostoevsky’s famous line ‘If God is dead, then everything is permissible’. While Sartre, in his famous essay ‘Existentialism is a Humanism’ affirmed this idea - claiming that it lay at the very heart of Existentialism - Lacan provocatively proclaimed, ‘if God is dead, then nothing is permissible’.

By understanding this conflict we can better grasp the meaning of anxiety and some of the problems we witness in comporary society.

The events are recorded so that people can engage live or listen later.
