Three Words for Longing with Maggie Rowe
In the aftermath of our three experimental liturgies, we are keen provide spaces for those who would like to develop the relationships, experience decentering practices and help us move forward.
So, with that in mind, in the coming months we’ll be hosting occasional gatherings in the LA area.
The first will be hosted by Maggie Rowe on Saturday, 29 August at 11:00 a.m. in the Larchmont area.
The morning will offer a space to reflect on three forms of longing that the English language struggles to name:
Hiraeth: a Welsh word for the ache of a home, place or time that may no longer exist.
Toska: a Russian word for a deep, restless yearning without any clear object.
Fernweh: a German word meaning, quite literally, “far-sickness”: the longing to be somewhere distant and unknown.
Maggie Rowe is a writer, performer and the author of Sin Bravely: A Memoir of Spiritual Disobedience, named one of NPR’s Best Books of the Year, and Easy Street: A Story of Redemption from Myself. She has written for television, including Arrested Development and Flaked, and co-hosts the podcast 50 Words for Snow with Emily John Garcés, exploring extraordinary words from around the world that capture experiences English sometimes struggles to name.
If you would like to attend, fill in the form below and we’ll reach out a few days before with the address. Space is limited to 20.
